Height, style, materials, gates and more. A simple checklist to plan a new fence you will be happy with for years.
A new fence is a big upgrade for your home: more privacy, a safer yard for kids and pets, and better curb appeal. A little planning up front makes sure you get the fence you actually want.
1. What is the fence for?
Privacy, keeping pets in, marking the property line or just looks? The answer decides the height and style.
2. Height and style
Six-foot privacy fences are the most common choice for backyards. Shorter picket or horizontal styles work well for front yards and a more open feel.
3. Materials
Cedar looks great and resists rot naturally. Pressure-treated pine is budget-friendly and strong. Both last much longer when they are stained.
4. Gates
Think about where you walk, mow and bring in trash bins. Most yards need at least one walk-through gate. A wider gate helps if you need to bring in equipment.
5. Rules and property lines
Check your HOA rules and the City of Lubbock guidelines for height and placement before you build, and make sure you know where your property line is.
6. Protecting the new wood
Plan to stain your new fence once the wood has dried out. It is the best way to keep that new-fence look.
